  • Open hand, fingers straight
  • Whole hand, wrist to fingertips
  • Phone flat above the palm

The first time, your browser downloads our hand finder: up to 20 MB, once. After that it starts at once.

Phone cameras see palm lines better. Scan to continue on your phone.

No photo? Take the hand type quiz

What shape is your palm?

Look at the palm only, from the wrist crease to the base of the fingers.

How long are your fingers?

Compare your middle finger with the length of your palm.

Measure with a ruler instead (in cm)

Ruler rule of thumb: square up to 1.15 times as long as wide, long from 1.25; fingers short up to 75% of the palm, long from 85%. Ruler numbers differ from photo numbers, which measure from the joints.

How it works

  1. You take or choose a photoIt opens only in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. A hand model finds 21 points on your handGoogle’s open MediaPipe hand model runs inside your browser, on your phone, and marks your wrist, knuckles and fingertips. It is downloaded from our site once.
  3. We measure and matchPalm length against width, and the middle finger against the palm, give your palm shape and finger length, and those give your hand type.

How to take the photo

Hold your hand open and flat, fingers straight and gently together, palm facing the camera. Keep the whole hand in the frame, from the wrist crease to the fingertips, with a little space around it.

Hold the phone flat above your palm, not at an angle: a tilted hand looks shorter or wider than it is. Daylight from a window works best; a plain background helps the hand finder.

Either hand works for shape, since both hands are usually a similar shape. Palmists usually look at the hand you write with.

What the hand types mean

The four-element system is a modern way of sorting hands, popular in 20th-century palmistry books. The classical books we cite elsewhere do not use it.

  • Earth hand: square palm, short fingersIn this modern system an earth hand is linked with a practical, steady nature: someone who likes doing things with their hands and trusts what is concrete. The modern four-element system (20th century), not the classical books
  • Air hand: square palm, long fingersAn air hand is linked with a curious, talkative mind, at home with ideas, words and other people. The modern four-element system (20th century), not the classical books
  • Fire hand: long palm, short fingersA fire hand is linked with energy and enthusiasm: quick to start things and drawn to action. The modern four-element system (20th century), not the classical books
  • Water hand: long palm, long fingersA water hand is linked with sensitivity and imagination, tuned in to feelings and moods. The modern four-element system (20th century), not the classical books
  • The older system: seven typesCheiro sorts hands into seven types instead: elementary, square, spatulate, philosophic, conic, psychic and mixed.Cheiro, Palmistry for All (1916), Part II, ch. I: The Study of the Shape of the Hands

What this tool can’t tell you

What palmistry can’t tell you. Palm lines can’t tell dates, how long you’ll live, your health, whether or when you’ll marry, how many children you’ll have, or how much money you’ll make.Palmistry is a tradition for reflection, not a science. Is palmistry real?

  • A hand type describes a shape, not your future. The element system links shapes with temperaments; it predicts nothing.
  • The element system is modern and is not in the classical books we use for line meanings, so no book citation is given for it.
  • The model marks joints, not skin creases, so our numbers are not ruler numbers. A result near a cut-off is shown as two types, and that is common.
  • A tilted hand, bent fingers or a wide-angle selfie can shift the numbers by a few percent. Try a second photo if you are near a cut-off.

Questions about this tool

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo opens in this browser tab and the hand model runs on your phone. Only the model itself is downloaded, from our site, once.

Why does it download up to 20 MB?

That is the hand model and the code that runs it. Your browser keeps them, so the next photo starts at once. It is the price of never sending your photo anywhere.

Where do the cut-offs come from?

Books judge “square” and “long” by eye. We measured 485 open-palm photos from a public hand-photo set the same way and took the middle third as “between two types”: palm length ÷ width up to 1.50 is square and from 1.60 long; middle finger ÷ palm up to 0.84 is short and from 0.90 long.

Is the element hand type from ancient palmistry?

No. The earth, air, fire and water system is modern. Older books, such as Cheiro’s Palmistry for All (1916), use seven hand types instead.

It says the back of my hand, or found no hand. What now?

Turn the palm to the camera, fit the whole hand in the frame with some space around it, and use good light. A plain background helps.
